The crazy thing about hobbies is you can always change your mind and try something else. Many people think trying a hobby green house is just too expensive because if you don’t like it you have put all this money out with no return. While I can appreciate that argument, my wife has a sewing machine and fabric up to her eyebrows that never gets used, though the intent is there, that cost a small fortune and just like that sewing machine, a green house can always be sold if it doesn’t work out.

However, there is also another way to experience the beauty of extending the growing season without investing in a large greenhouse and that’s the use of a winter cold frame. You can use the flowerbeds or garden that you currently have and utilize the clod frame to cover a small section of produce throughout the late fall and early winter. Though this will give you only a taste of what a larger green house will do, it allows you to see if this is really something you can sink your teeth into; no pun intended. Once you determine that growing year round is for you then you can then take the next step to purchase a larger greenhouse.

I realized that when I said garden décor my mother heard one thing; garden gnomes. I found this out once I had received my seventh gnome after letting her know that I would like to have gifts for my garden. I had to have a discussion with her so she would broaden her view of what garden décor is. Once I showed her all the different items that qualify as garden décor, she was stunned and vowed that her gifting would be changing this year.

To help her get a since of what I like, I shared with her the new pergola that we have just installed in the backyard. We placed it along the back fence over one of our favorite spots where we can look back at the house and just enjoy the sunset view during our evenings together. I had to laugh when mother stated that she really liked that kind of décor! I am always surprised at how communication can be received so differently than it was intended. But hopefully, now that she has a full range of what garden décor is, my gnome collection will be joined by some different items in the near future!

Artist Jacqueline Penney has lived and worked on Long Island all her life. Her gallery is located in Cutchogue, which is situated on the North Fork between Long Island Sound and Great Peconic Bay. There, surrounded by the sea and salt marsh, she finds ample inspiration for her lovely pastoral paintings and seascapes. Her painting, Inlet, is full of quiet charm. A tidal river meanders through an inlet flanked by wild flowers and white sand beaches. The summer blue sky is full of cottony clouds. An antique farm house appears from a thick stand of trees. A sailboat is moored below. In the far distance, the river empties to the sea. This peaceful scene has been recreated for your home as a tapestry. Hang it wherever you want to create an aura of tranquility and calm with your Inlet Tapestry.

The Inlet tapestry is part of the Coastal collection in Decor4u.com’s European Tapestries line. Find it in the Tapestry Shop. It measures 60 inches high by 26 inches wide and is made of 100% cotton. You can Spot or dry clean. Visit the Tapestry Accessories department and pick the perfect rod and tassels to complement your tapestry.
