If you are lucky enough to have wild blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries around your neighborhood, you are probably already a collector of Berry Pie recipes. If your recipes are like mine, they are most likely scribbled up a bit. The reason is that berries have personalities that vary from year to year. Some are sweeter years, some are more tart. One year you add a touch more sugar, the next year, a touch less. It takes a little tasting and tweaking, but that first slice is worth the effort. If you have to go to the farmers market for your berries, you still know what a treat it is digging into your first piece of pie each season. Either way, berry season IS pie season! Italian Plinio Codognato (1878-1940) was one of the most prominent poster artists of the inter-war years. In his poster, Vini di Lusso (circa 1922), he employs his trademark use of bold imagery, strong color contrast and mythical figures. The head of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, is shown, mouth opened hungrily to accept a dangling bunch of golden grapes. The background is black and the red of Bacchus’ face and the purple of his wreath and the grapevine seem to glow. In contrast, his eye, the gold of the grapes themselves and the words “Vini di Lusso” across the top blaze out from the picture. The mark and title of Societá Italiana Vini Superiori are also emblazoned across the bottom in the same gold Art Deco font. This striking and famous work has been given lustrous new life as a Vini di Lusso tapestry wall hanging, available at Decor4u.com. Hang it wherever you want to make a bold impression. Many of the healthier diets recommend a lot of the same foods over and over again. Whole grain foods, low fat dairy or soy, fresh fruits, a variety of vegetables, lean proteins. One of the lean proteins often mentioned includes nuts. Nuts are a very wholesome, natural food that offer solid nutrition and healthy protein when eaten in small amounts. You can add them to meals or have a few almonds with an apple for a healthy and satisfying snack. They’re also great as a salad topper. But nuts can get a little pricey, especially if you like the more gourmet versions of these protein powerhouses. That’s why this Back to Basics Stove Top Nut Roaster is such a neat idea. I have a pantry filled to capacity. The culprit? Salsa! When I’m wandering through the grocery store, specialty food shop, or meat market, I usually find myself in the section that contains those wonderful, home-style salsas. With a passion for all things salsa, I figured that a crockpot salsa chicken dish would be an instant winner. I was right! And talk about being simple… anyone can throw together a five-star meal with just two ingredients. That’s what I call family-friendly. Read the rest of this entry »

My family just loves casseroles and I love making them because they’re an easy meal to make. A couple of our family favorites include my cheesy chicken casserole, or a delicious chicken and rice casserole, my extra cheesy au gratin potatoes, and my mother’s chicken a la King recipe. And I’m always on the lookout for more great recipes. I was recently making a yummy beef barbecue casserole when I dropped my dish and it shattered on the kitchen floor. That was the end of my old casserole dish. When I was looking for a new casserole dish, I wanted to buy a really nice one – which is why I bought this beautiful Corelle 5 Piece Casserole Set. There’s something so inviting and comforting about the smell and taste of homemade cookies. Part of the reason is the sentimental part, the memories of baking in the kitchen with my sisters and my grandmother. The other part is how delicious they are! Now that I’m older I’m busy making new memories with my own children, spending time in the kitchen cooking together and of course, baking chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies. Winter is just around the corner and I know we’ll be having the oven on a lot more and filling up our ceramic cookie jar again with batches of homemade goodies. Read the rest of this entry »
