If you are lucky enough to have wild blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries around your neighborhood, you are probably already a collector of Berry Pie recipes. If your recipes are like mine, they are most likely scribbled up a bit. The reason is that berries have personalities that vary from year to year. Some are sweeter years, some are more tart. One year you add a touch more sugar, the next year, a touch less. It takes a little tasting and tweaking, but that first slice is worth the effort. If you have to go to the farmers market for your berries, you still know what a treat it is digging into your first piece of pie each season. Either way, berry season IS pie season!

With every berry season, my collection of cheap fruit recipes grows bigger and bigger. I like picking my own berries when possible, being as choosy as I want, and saving money at the same time. When I put together a pie or crisp with berries or fruit I picked myself, I sit back and feel proud of my accomplishment, mixed with a little sense of awe. Isn’t Mother Nature grand!
